Do you know that Japanese scientists recently received acknowledgement from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry that they had synthesized Element 113 in the Periodic Table? And that they exhibited the quintessential yamato damashi (the Japanese spirit) while doing so? Read the lowdown on what happened and feel yamato damashi for yourself!

1. It all started in 2003

Dr.Morita led a group of scientists in this revolutionary project. They fired beams of zinc at a thin bismuth film in a particle accelerator at 10 percent the speed of light.

2. It saw early success in 2004

These scientists were able to combine two atomic nuclei from zinc and bismuth, thus producing their first nucleus of Element 113.

3. It had its fair share of failures

But this first nucleus decayed in less than a thousandth of a second! The team worked hard to produce Element 113 again in 2005, but the union deemed this production too weak to be declared a discovery.

4. It brought out the best in the scientists

Dr. Morita refused to give up. He believed fervently that if his team continued their hard work, lady luck would shine on them again. So they spent the next seven years trying to find evidence that they had synthesized Element 113 successfully.

5. It yielded success at the end

Finally, all their hard work reaped dividends. In 2012, they managed to prove that they had synthesized Element 113!
This story tells us that one must not be daunted by failure and keep on working hard towards his goal.

Now what’s left is the naming of Element 113. Dr. Morita might just name his invention “Japonium”. Why not? It encapsulates yamato damashi so well!
