Shiso is an important herb in Japan used not only in cooking but also in other various ways.
What is Shiso?
At Japanese restaurants, you can sometimes find green or reddish purple leaves that are used as a receptacle for sushi and sashimi. If you don’t know the name of this leaf, it is called shiso. Being a member of the mint family, shiso boosts an herbaceous, citrusy taste which makes it suitable for a wide range of uses. Read on to learn about the versatility of shiso!
1. In Cooking
Shiso, Used in the raw state for seasoning, and shiso tenpura is eaten as well.
2) In skin care
Packed with full of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, shiso is an excellent anti-bacterial agent. Shiso is now used by major skincare brands like The Body Shop as it brings about a more even skin tone due to its ability to fight pigmentation and minimize the formation of dark spots!
3) In traditional medicine
Shiso is a wonder-herb and when combined with shijimi (basket clams), is said to help prevent anemia and even fight cancer. Some Japanese people also combine it with ginger, rice vinegar or umeboshi (Japanese pickled plums) to help blood circulation and prevent obesity.
