Have The Worst Years In Your Life Come Yet?

Japan is sure to be a land of superstitions. It is believed that there are unlucky years of your age. Here is how to avoid those unlucky years.

Beware Of Yaku-Doshi!

Have you ever had one of those really bad days? How about one of those years?
Perhaps you've been experiencing a yaku-doshi!

It's not a ghost or a monster (although it might feel like there is one stalking you sometimes), yaku-doshi is a traditional superstition in Japan which many people still believe, in which certain years (of your age) are potentially unlucky, definitely unlucky or still unlucky.

The years considered to be unlucky are different for men and women, but it is possible to visit a Shinto Hachiman shrine in Japan in the beginning of one of your unlucky year-sets, from the 18th to the 19th of January to have a yakubarai ritual performed, and to purchase small items to carry with you to ward off unlucky happenings for the coming years, so at least you are not alone in this!

The origins of the list of unlucky ages are obscure as its first form dates all the way back to the 6th century, when the philosophical idea of Yin and Yang was first brought to Japan, and some people believe that certain ages are unlucky because they sound similar to “death” (42, shini) or “terrible” (33, sanzan) in the Japanese language, but everyone agrees that when you enter into a yakudoshi time, it pays to be ready, and to get through it as positively as you can.

Forewarned is forearmed, so here is the list of ages to watch out for.

For Men: 25, 42, 61

For Women: 19, 33, 37

Also, the years before and after each “unlucky” age are considered to be potentially unlucky (before) and still unlucky (after).
If you've already been through one or more of these time periods, then you know how it will be: no matter what, always remember that a strong will and a good outlook, even in the face of apparent misfortune, will always bring you through dark times into happier ones.

Stay strong, and be lucky, no matter what!
