5 Mouthwatering Japanese Summer Foods to Eat

Summer's upon us, and there're many great foods we can feast on to beat the scorching heat. From unagi to kakigori, the choice are aplenty. Let me introduce five such delicious foods!

1) Unagi

Eating unagi is standard practice in Japan in summer because it contains truckloads of vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E. So tucking into unagi provides a much-needed energy boost for you to recharge yourself and continue your daily routine. In fact, special days called "Doyo Ushi no Hi" (Day of the Eel) are celebrated in Japan, so pay a visit to the supermarket and get yourself an exclusive deal!

2) Hiyashi Chuka

Nothing beats savoring a life-giving bowl of hiyashi chukka (chilled ramen noodles) in summer. What's more, these noodles are tantalisingly topped with wholesome vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes and carrots. Thin slices of tamagoyaki (egg omelette) and ham round up the dish for a refreshing, multi-dimensional taste.

3) Watermelons

It's a taboo to play with food, but with watermelons in Japan, it's something highly encouraged! Referred to as "suikawari", this watermelon game requires blindfolded players trying to hit a watermelon with a baseball bat until it is smashed open. The first one to smash it open is declared the winner - and the rest of the players enjoy (literally) the fruits of his labor!

4) Mizu shingen mochi

Here's a unique dessert you ought to try in summer. Known as mizu shingen mochi (water mochi), this dessert grabs your attention as it looks like a pure water drop. Not mentioning how it packs a punch in terms of taste when you eat it with kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) and kinako (roasted soybean powder).

Just a note of caution: mizu shingen mochi disappears after half an hour when served at room temperature, so don't be so distracted by its attractive appearance that you don't finish eating it in time.

5) Kakigori

No list of Japanese summer foods would be complete with kakigori, the quintessential summer dessert. Made from pure spring water, kakigori refreshes your palate with its flavored syrup as well as yummy toppings that span from green tea to melon and sweet plum. Choose your favorite flavor and toppings, and enjoy it away from the sweltering heat!
Summer in Japan need not be a drag, now that you know these five amazing summer foods to tuck into. Itadakimasu!
